Liquidity

How fast you can turn something into cash without destroying the price.

Why it matters

You do not need liquidity — until life suddenly demands it, on a deadline, in cash.

In plain language

Everything you own sits somewhere on a speed scale. Cash is instant. A broad ETF sells in seconds at the market price. An apartment takes months. A stake in a friend's business may take years — or a friendship.

Liquidity has two parts: how fast, and at what discount. Many things can be sold quickly if you accept a brutal price. True liquidity means fast AND fair.

A portfolio can be rich on paper and helpless in practice. The mix matters: some money should always be reachable.

In real life

The designer bag 'worth' $8,000 is worth exactly what the right buyer pays on the day you actually need the money — and the right buyer keeps her own calendar.

In the market

A public stock sells with one tap. A private startup stake often cannot be sold at all until some distant event — the value may be real, but you can't touch it.

The common mistake

Reading your net worth as if it were all available. Paper value and usable money are different currencies.

Emergencies don't wait for auctions.

Cash and anything that sells in seconds at a fair price (broad funds, liquid stocks). The apartment, the stake, and the bag are real wealth — on someone else's calendar.
