Risk
Risk is not just the chart moving. It is also not understanding what you own.
Why it matters
Most people fear the wrong risks and ignore the expensive ones.
In plain language
The visible risk is volatility — prices moving around, sometimes violently. It feels dangerous because it's loud. But movement alone can't hurt you unless it forces you to sell at the wrong moment.
The quieter risks do the real damage: owning something you don't understand, money you can't reach when life calls (liquidity), everything depending on one bet (concentration), outright fraud, and a time horizon that doesn't match your life.
Risk is also personal. The same portfolio can be safe for a patient owner and dangerous for an anxious one — because the anxious one will sell at the bottom.
In real life
A business with one whale client looks stable every single month — until one phone call. The chart was calm; the risk was enormous.
In the market
A boring index fund that swings 20% but that you understand and can hold may carry less real risk for you than a 'stable' product you can't explain at dinner.
The common mistake
Calling something safe because its price hasn't moved lately. Some risks only report themselves once.
