Trading Rules

Rules protect you from yourself — specifically, from the 2 a.m. version.

Why it matters

Under pressure you don't rise to your intelligence. You fall to your preparation.

In plain language

A trading (or investing) rule is a decision made in advance by the calm version of you, so the stressed version doesn't have to improvise: how much any one idea can get, what triggers a sale, when to review, what you never buy.

Rules work because emotional states are temporary but decisions made inside them are permanent. The rule is a bridge across your own bad hour — 'no selling on red days; decisions on Sundays' has saved more portfolios than most analysis.

Good rules are few, personal, and written down. Ten vague principles get renegotiated at the worst moment; three specific ones survive contact with fear. (Every great trader interview eventually says the same sentence: the edge was discipline, not prediction.)

In real life

'No important emails after 11 p.m.' exists because past-you learned what tired-you writes. Same governance, different account.

In the market

In The Season, the Sunday review rule is a literal fence: one scheduled look, the rest of the week returned to your life. Players with the rule survive the checking spirals they never enter.

The common mistake

Making rules and keeping them negotiable. A rule with a 'just this once' clause isn't a rule; it's a mood with paperwork.

Write the rules while calm. Under pressure, you'll follow instructions you find — make sure they're yours.

Quick self-check

What makes a rule actually hold when it matters?

Reveal Theia’s answer ↓

It was specific, written before the emergency, and treated as non-negotiable. The moment a rule can be argued with mid-panic, the panic wins the argument.
