Social Proof

Everyone buying something does not make it safe.

Why it matters

The crowd's confidence is the cheapest thing to borrow in markets — and the most expensive to repay.

In plain language

Social proof is the shortcut of assuming something is safe because many people are doing it. In restaurants, it works: a full dining room genuinely signals decent food. In markets, it inverts: the fuller the trade, the higher the price, the thinner the future demand.

Worse, everyone else is often using the same shortcut. The crowd looks like a thousand independent opinions; it's frequently one opinion, photocopied — everyone reassured by everyone, no one holding actual evidence.

Numbers don't launder risk. A thousand buyers of a bad thing are a thousand people with the same problem — scams, in fact, depend on exactly this: each victim reassuring the next just by existing.

In real life

The restaurant with the queue may just have slow service. The investment 'everyone in the group is doing' has the same audit problem — the queue is not the kitchen.

In the market

In the boutique, the TikTok stock's whole pitch is that everyone's talking about it. That's not a fundamentals section. That's the absence of one, wearing a crowd.

The common mistake

Outsourcing conviction. Borrowed conviction fails precisely when you need it: the crowd that talked you in will not text you before it leaves.

A thousand people can be early. They can also be a thousand people who are wrong together, expensively.

Your three smartest friends all bought the same asset. What has that changed about the asset?

Nothing — only its price, slightly, and your feelings, greatly. Their purchase is a fact about them. The asset's value still has to be checked the boring way.
